Peshawar Zalmis Talent Hunt Great Success

July 2022

The Peshawar Zalmi Talent Hunt proved very popular for local players, as over fifty aspiring young
cricketers took their chance to fulfil a dream to be signed by the Zalmi's.
Former Pakistan legend, Inzamam-ul-haq & Mohammed Akram amongst others, were the
Coaches on the Day.

Introduction to the day by Inzamam-ul-haq

During the day Dave and Mike Knight were presented with Peshawar Zalmi shirts,
which were signed by Inzamam and Mohammed Akram.

Meeting Mohammed Akram gave the opportunity to reminisce the past as it was explained to him that he had played a decisive
part in helping Newport to win the Western League in 1995.

As a young played Akram played several matches for Brislington in the Western League.
Towards the end of the season there was a 3 horse race to win the league. Newport were top and playing away to 2nd place Malmesbury, whilst
Brislington were playing away to 3rd placed Bath. It was very tight at the top of the league with just a handful of points separating the 3 teams.
In a game of nearly 600 runs, Newport overcame a Philo Wallace (West Indies Test player), inspired Malmesbury, winning the game by just 2 runs.
With Malmesbury needing 3 to win, off the final ball of the match, with the last pair at the wicket, off-spinner Peter Clitheroe stepped up and with
a high full toss that hit the top of middle stump, claimed the last wicket, to give Newport a vital maximum points.

For the Record
Newport 267-6 (Dave Knight 111no) Malmesbury 265 all out (Philo Wallace 101, Gareth Edwards 5-74). Newport won by 2 runs

The other half of the story, was that word had filtered through that Mohammed Akram was playing for Brislington against Bath. No live scores on the
internet in those days, so several phone calls throughout the afternoon, found that Akram had claimed 6-18 for Brislington and Bath had been beaten.
The two results, a Newport win and defeats for their nearest challengers, extended Newport's lead at the top of the Western League table. A lead that
was never relinquished and the league title.

The story was told and thanks given to Akram, who remembered the occasion well.

Back to the Talent Hunt ..... and good news for Muji who was selected for the next stage of the Talent Hunt to be held in Birmingham later in the season.
Congratulations Muji.
